We Split Heads in Monterey
| By Larry Lawrence, Racing Correspondent Photos by Brian J. Nelson Buell/Motorcycle Online Team Owner Brent Plummer), Gary (Harley-Davidson engineer Gary Stippich) and Dave (team rider Dave Estok) spent three days in beautiful Monterey, California. I would like to tell you that team members spent their spare time down on Cannery Row reading Steinbeck, eating seafood and drinking wine followed by brisk jaunts up and down 17-Mile Drive and tee times at Pebble Beach. Instead Brent and Gary spent countless hours in Laguna Seca Racway's paddock rebuilding motors with frozen hands while Dave stayed huddled up in the team's motorhome playing tug of war over a plastic water bottle with Uda, the team dog.
Their labors were rewarded however when Dave planted the bike on the front row for Sunday's Pro Thunder final.
The cold, hard reality hit the shell-shocked Buell/MO crew Sunday evening. One finish in five races so far this season. Dave has dropped to 15th in the series standings. Everyone sat in the motorhome contemplating the team's incredible streak of hard luck on the California swing. Your's truly tried encouraging the team. "At least it should be warmer in Atlanta next month." No smiles.
By the end of the three week Cali swing Dave was saying he was more than ready to get back East. "I feel more comfortable in humidity." The team will move its base of operation to Milwaukee for the summer. The one-month break before Road Atlanta is much needed time to rebuild the and restock the parts bin. The championship hopes for the team look very dim as we near the half-way point in the season, but hopes for victories are still very much alive. |
MO Racing Would Like to Thank:
| First and foremost, thanks to the people at Harley-Davidson who help make MO Racing: Joe Hice for keeping the faith; Gary Stippich for his tireless engineering support and wealth of knowledge; Amy Giuffre for countless hours loading and unloading the MO transport, the cool team uniforms and t-shirt designs; Steve "Uncle Jesse" Piehl for his endless patience and continued support through the years; Wally Anderson from H-D powertrain operations for making parts and assembling engines on top of his other duties -- get well soon, Wally. From Buell American Motorcycles: Erik Buell for obvious reasons and Henry Duga for all the parts support. Lastly, a special thanks to our main competitor this year, Don Tilley, for being there with parts and help when we're confused and lost. |
